An ally of a small Florida church says the planned burning of the Koran on the anniversary of the September 11 attacks has been "100 per cent" cancelled.
"I want to be clear and confirm one hundred per cent that there will not be Korans burning tomorrow (Saturday) at 6pm as was planned," evangelical leader K A Paul told a press conference on Friday.
He made the commitment even though a New York imam failed to contact the Florid
"At this time we have not heard from the imam," Jones told the press conference.
"But we are still very, very hopeful that we will meet with him and we are still very convinced through the different channels that we have, that we at this time cannot mention, that this meeting will take place tomorrow."
Amid global outrage over the planned burning, Jones on Thursday said he was dropping the Koran burning idea by his Dove World Outreach Centre, claiming Muslim leaders had agreed to move the planned mosque further away from Ground Zero.
The plans to build an Islamic cultural centre close to the site where the World Trade Centre once stood before it was destroyed on 9/11 have triggered an angry debate in the United States.
